2008-2009 AAAE/ASA Awards for Outstanding Support of Arts Education

Each year the Arizona Alliance for Arts Education and the Arizona School Administrators Association awards a Superintendent  and a Adminstrator who have shown significant support for arts education.

This year, Arizona Alliance for Arts Education and Arizona School Administrators' Association jointly presented the 2008 Superintendent Award for Outstanding Support in Arts Education to Dr. Mike Cowan, Associate Superintendent of Mesa Public Schools. Mike was nominated for his dedication and advocacy to the arts in Mesa Public Schools.

The 2008 Administrator Award for Outstanding Support in Arts Education went to Laurie Little, Principal, Desert Harbor Elementary School in the Peoria Unified School District. The Administrator Arts Education Award recognizes the commitment and support for arts education programs demonstrated through an individual's support of funding, program promotion, maintenance and/or expansion. The award recognizes significant contributions, sustainability of arts education programs and the affect the arts programs have on students, teachers and the schools.

NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SUMMER MUSIC INSTITUTE : June 29- July 27, 2009

The Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra annually sponsors the Summer Music Institute for talented young musicians. The Arizona Alliance will submit the state's top five nominees to the Kennedy Center panel. One musician from most states will be selected to participate on scholarship for the 4-week 2009 Summer Music Institute program. This program is designed for serious music students, and includes round-trip air transportation to and from Washington, D. C., housing, local transportation, and meals.

Program Description: The Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute is a 4-week summer music program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, for student instrumentalists. The program is designed for serious music students. Each student accepted into the Program attends on full scholarship, which includes the following benefits: round-trip air transportation to and from Washington, DC, housing, food allowance, and local transportation during their stay in our Nation's Capital.
  • Private lessons taught by a member of the National Symphony Orchestra
  • Chamber music coaching by NSO musicians 
  • Master classes and seminars 
  • Attendance at selected rehearsals and performances of the NSO 
  • Participation in the NSO Summer Music Institute Orchestra, conducted by Elizabeth Schulze 
  • Performance opportunities in DC metropolitan area 
  • Exposure to internationally-renowned conductors, soloists, and musicians
Eligibility: The Program is open, by recorded audition, to students ages 15-20 (as of June 29, 2009) who are seriously considering orchestral music as a career and willing to devote themselves to a musical education, as follows:
Instruments: National Trustees  fellowships may be awarded to students who play any of the following: violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and harp (not eligible: guitar, saxophone, percussion, and piano)

FOR SUPERINTENDENT - Accepting Nominations!

The Arizona Alliance for Arts Education and the Arizona School Administrators encourage nominations of Superintendents that have demonstrated commitment and support for arts education programs in Arizona through funding, program promotion, maintenance or expansion.

Specific criteria include:
Significance of contribution

  • Ongoing scope of the arts education programs
  • Effect of the arts program on students, teachers and the school
  • Nominee must be a member of Arizona School Administrators Inc (ASA)
  • Nominator must be a member of Arizona Alliance for Arts Education (AAAE)
